Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and manage stagecraft of performances. It applies to individuals who are responsible for contributing ideas to the overall look, feel and sound of performances in collaboration with other creative and production personnel. They are also responsible for overseeing that stagecraft goes according to plan during performances. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

relevant instruments, equipment and/or technology

appropriate performing space and associated technical personnel

opportunities to perform before an audience.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Plan stagecraft of performances
  • Collaborate with appropriate people on the design of performances and order of repertoire
  • Generate, discuss and refine ideas with appropriate people about aspects of stagecraft to engage audience
  • Agree stagecraft and confirm role of each person in performances
  • Select equipment and/or technology for performances to support stagecraft
  • Anticipate problems that may arise, and plan contingencies accordingly
  • Organise performances to be recorded for later evaluation, if possible
       
Element: Lead a group during performances
  • Collaborate with appropriate people during performance set-up to ensure that stagecraft aspects of performances will run as planned and that work health and safety (WHS) requirements are implemented
  • Rehearse planned stagecraft aspects of performances as required
  • Conduct a pre-performance check with group members, and make any final adjustments as required
  • Perform own role confidently, including introductions, segues and concluding remarks as required
  • Respond to the unexpected on stage or front of house, to maintain the flow and integrity of performances
  • Interact cooperatively with other performers on stage, and ensure that their work is appropriately acknowledged
  • Communicate effectively with audiences before, between and after performances

Evidence of the ability to:

conduct rehearsals and pre-performance checks

perform own role including:

providing introductions and other remarks

respond to unplanned events

interact with other performers

engage with the audience

integrate feedback from others, and evaluate stagecraft aspects of performances.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain stagecraft and how it can be used to enhance performances

describe roles and responsibilities of creative and technical personnel involved in stage performances

explain requirements of leading a group prior to and during performances

describe challenges that arise in the context of stagecraft aspects of performances, and explain how they might be overcome

outline work health and safety requirements relevant to managing stagecraft.
